Nate Walker, of the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia, will explore how Jewish and Christian theologies on atonement teach us that suffering is redemptive. Rev. Nate challenges this belief system by using the traditional theology of atonement as a conceptual lens through which to view two cases: AIDS and agent Orange. He asks whether or not the “sins” of homosexuals were reconciled through the 3 million people who died last year from AIDS. He goes on to ask, does the theology of atonement apply to the 3 million people who currently suffer from diseases caused by Agent Orange, a chemical used by the Americans in Vietnam? OR could it be that god has no ego and no desire to avenge, leaving us to ask whether or not the biological and political views of suffering call us to be at-one with all who suffer? Comments[0] |

Sun, 24 August 2008 August 24: “Restorative Justice”Coordinators: Tom Thomas and Larry Menkes Laura Rush, MSW, Conferencing Program Coordinator for the Community Service Foundation & Buxmont Academy, will speak to us about the practice of Restorative Practices. The restorative practices concept has its roots in "restorative justice," a new way of looking at criminal justice that focuses on repairing the harm done to people and relationships rather than on punishing offenders. This is a new approach to our first UU principle in the criminal justice field. Plan to come and be inspired. As the leaves turn and the weather turns cold, our thoughts often turn to the change of season. What lessons can we glean from the season’s change and our human response?
Rev. Jerry Johnson, a retired American Baptist minister, will share his spiritual journey since he began attending BuxMont in 2008. He became a member that year and is now serving on several committees. Although his Christian faith was very liberal and far from orthodox, he still considers himself a Christian and has joined UU Christians. His reflections will include his modified Christian beliefs, current spiritual practice and hope for continued spiritual formation here at BuxMont.
In the season of turning, of the Jewish high holy days and of nature’s changes, how might we renew our spirits for the work before us?
